A master class in flower gardening and arranging, from beloved potter Frances Palmer

Frances Palmer has spent nearly four decades creating work that has caught the attention of ceramics lovers, designers, writers, and fellow artists around the world. But there is a whole other vibrant side of her creative life that she’s equally passionate about, devoted to, and expert in—flower gardening and arranging. They are two parallel practices, one indoors in the studio, throwing pots and vases to elevate the flowers, and one outdoors in the garden, raising the most extraordinary flowers to inspire new pots and vases.

Filled with the author’s stunning photography (a third and equally important parallel practice), Life with Flowers is an invitation to both her garden, where we learn all about the planting and arranging of flowers, and her artistic process, showing us how she thinks about flowers, seasons, the land, beauty, form, and everything else that goes into her creative life.

To start, Palmer divides the year into six specific growing periods, from prevernal—those late winter days when the first snowdrops and hellebores appear—through summer and autumnal, with its dahlias and Japanese anemones, to hibernal, as we move back indoors and enjoy forced bulbs and greenhouse flowers. It’s this rich understanding of the gardening year that encourages, in turn, the idea of planning and planting in waves, ensuring that there is always an abundance of bloom and a continual flow of colors, heights, and shapes, providing an endless variety of arrangements.

Generous in sharing her decades of experience and filled with DIY projects, practical tips, favorite recipes that incorporate flowers, and meditations on patience, nature’s unpredictability, flowers in art, and more, this is a book as rich, varied, beautiful, and nourishing as the gardens Frances Palmer has lovingly created.

  • “Frances Palmer, beloved potter, gardener, photographer, and cook, has written a personal tale of the flowers she grows and displays in every season with charmingly instructive detail.”
Page Dickey, author and director emeritus of the Garden Conservancy
  • “No one grows and arranges flowers with the same enchanting, joyful spirit as Frances. What a gift then to devour her new book, basking in the floral glow of each and every variety she loves, her creative touchstones, and that coveted list of nurseries and suppliers! Flower lovers, prepare for peak inspiration. My heart was ablaze with each turn of the page.”
Amy Merrick, florist and author of On Flowers
  • “Whether you find blooms out your front door or never pick up a trowel but love to fill vases, this gorgeous book of beautiful blooms, artful arrangements, and wise words is an inspiration. It’s guaranteed to bring on flower lust, lift your spirits, and nourish your soul.”
Dominique Browning, author and founder and director of Moms Clean Air Force
  • “Who better to show us how to arrange flowers? Frances Palmer not only grows buckets of them, but she also creates beautifully distinct vessels that make you pay attention to every twisting stem and folding petal of these glorious plants.”
Stephen Orr, author of The New American Herbal
  • "Frances Palmer is a Constance Spry for the twenty-first century. Like Spry, she is a skilled and passionate gardener, and this process informs how she uses flowers in the vase. And, like Spry, she designs beautiful vases and vessels for her floral masterpieces—but Palmer goes on to both make those vessels herself and photograph the results. These extraordinary, complementary talents are captured and generously shared in this sublime book."
