About the Author

Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1832 and raised in Concord, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of author Bronson Alcott, who along with his wife, joined their neighbors Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau in forming the transcendentalist movement. Much of Little Women is based on Alcott’s own childhood. A prolific writer, Alcott supported many of her family members with her earnings. She died in Boston in 1888.
