About the Author

Philip Frankel is a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Witwatersrand, and is the author of Pretoria’s Praetorians: Civil-Military Relations in South Africa. In 1997-1998 he was commissioned by the South African National Defense Force to research and communicate strategy policy for organizational transformation, which has enabled him to access documentation (including some previously classified materials) that has never been examined by any other scholar.
